Myles Garret’s response to LeBron James’s departure is both endearing and revealing about how he views himself, his role, his responsibility with the Cleveland Browns.

With all the hoopla in LeBron James deciding to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, it’s interesting that for the second time in as many months, Myles Garrett has made it pretty clear he plans to be on the Cleveland Browns a very long time, which is a really good thing.

Garrett made headlines when he criticized Kevin Durant for taking ‘easy mode’ going to a 73-9 Golden State Warriors team to win a pair of championships.

Then, upon seeing the news about LeBron, Garrett tweeted the following

Perhaps he was actually referring to a piece of furniture, but this seems to be referring to LeBron’s place in Cleveland. Garrett is a huge basketball fan and if you get him talking about it, he’ll admit that he almost went to college just for basketball instead of football, believing he had professional talent in that sport.

He’s also an extremely educated fan in basketball as well as many other things. When criticizing Durant, Garrett did it from a place, having studied the history of the NBA. Watching players like like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird and even older. He made reference to the idea that superstars make teams rather than join them.

People can dismiss this as just lip service and a great line, but looking at the pattern of how Garrett talks, how he views things, be it in sports or anything else, he has been consistent. It’s pretty clear when Garrett is joking, so when he says stuff like this, he means it.

It’s obviously more difficult to do in football, but Garrett has major aspirations for his NFL career and the Browns. Even as a rookie, when asked about what he wanted to accomplish as a rookie, he did not hesitate when he said he wanted to be the best defensive end in the league. That’s how he thinks, how he works and how he plays the game.

After he was drafted, when media asked him what he thought about the culture in Cleveland. He responded by saying, “We (referring to himself, Jabrill Peppers and David Njoku) are going to change things right away and that we can win and we will win.”

Entering his second year, his aspirations to be the best haven’t changed. If anything, he’s more confident about how good he can be in year two. He believes himself to be a superstar and carries himself like one. So when criticizes someone like Durant or makes this comment about LeBron, he’s thinking about himself and how he would act.

With this tweet, he’s only reinforcing a simple point; Garrett plans to be a Cleveland Brown a very, very long time. A lot can change between now and when his rookie contract comes up in three years, but he’s saying the things that suggest he wants to spend his career with the Browns, which should excite Browns fans and Cleveland fans in general.

LeBron may be leaving, but Myles Garrett seems to be putting the pressure on himself to deliver, letting fans know the Cleveland Browns are going to get better and he is going to be a major reason to make them better. Rather than worrying about what team he can be better on, Garrett is solely focused on making the Browns great and he plans to do it for years. The Browns have had players that have talked a pretty good game, but not to this level and no one with the type of talent that convinces people anything is possible.
