5. Frank Ragnow, G (Arkansas)

While the onus in the NFL these days is on the quarterback position and the passing game, running the football remains a key to success. The Detroit Lions have failed miserably at the latter in recent years and it is but one of a few reasons the club has struggled to win consistently for far too long.

So general manager Bob Quinn addressed the offensive line and the running back position not only in free agency but early in April. With the 20th overall pick in this year’s draft, the club opted for Arkansas’ Frank Ragnow, a versatile blocker who can line up anywhere. And when asked earlier this spring in terms of where he should play, he had the perfect answer.

“Don’t really have a preference,” explained the former Razorback center and right guard to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press in late May. “Just want to be out there helping the team. I’ve played a lot of positions in high school, played a lot of positions in college. I just like playing football and wherever they put me I’m going to be happy to be there.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for the NFL,” added the 6’5”, 312-pound prospect at OTAs. “It’s a whole different speed and these are a lot of talented guys out here. All the way, four deep, everybody’s really talented. So it’s been an adjustment, but it’s been fun to get to work and kind of just learn every day.”

Fixing the group up front is one way to cure what ails the Detroit ground attack.
