4. Will the upgrades on defense be fruitful?

During the offseason, the Jets weren’t very active early in free agency. However, by the end of the draft, they made upgrades to all three levels of the defense. In the linebacker group and the defensive backfield, they upgraded by adding veterans. Then on the defensive line, they did so by adding rookies.

The coverage on the Jets defense was their true Achilles heel in 2017. So the Jets added Trumaine Johnson in free agency. Avery Williamson was also added as a three-down linebacker who can cover and stop the run. The Jets also drafted linemen Nathan Shepherd and Foley Fatukasi, and they both can make an impact in 2017.

Many were excited by the Jets offseason, because of Sam Darnold, but a little dismayed they didn’t come away with a talented pass rusher in either the draft or free agency. That said, if the Jets do get what they want from the front line and coverage, they just may see a jump in production from the edge rushers that the fans desperately want to see.

This defense is going to be the epitome of team defense. Each level will have to do their part to make the other levels look good. That’s all up to Kacy Rodgers to get the best he can out of this defense.
