Arizona Cardinals: Is Mike Glennon the odd man out?
By Larry Brake
In the race for the Arizona Cardinals starting quarterback job, Mike Glennon might be the odd man out.
With the Arizona Cardinals, Mike Glennon is playing for his third team in his short NFL career. Since being drafted by Tampa Bay in the 2013 NFL Draft, he has started just 22 games. He started four games before being replaced last season in Chicago. He is looking to become the Cardinals starting quarterback.
However, Arizona signed Sam Bradford in addition to Glennon, and then drafted Josh Rosen. The pending competition for the quarterback slot is focusing on Bradford and Rosen. What can Glennon do to turn heads and win the job?
Physically, Glennon stands 6-6, weighing 229 pounds. He replaced Josh Freeman as the starting quarterback for Tampa Bay in his rookie season. Unfortunately, Josh McCown replaced him as Tampa Bay’s starter the following season.
Glennon earned just a 5-13 record as the Tampa Bay quarterback. He threw for 4,100 yards on 374 passes with 30 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He became a free agent after declining Tampa Bays contract extension in 2017.
Glennon signed with Chicago for 2017. He started four games, but won just one. His five interceptions in three games doomed him as the starter as then-rookie Mitchell Trubisky took the job. Chicago let him walk this spring after one season.
Christian D’Andrea of SB Nation commented about Glennon in February:
"Glennon’s days as a starter are finished, and it seems unlikely he’ll sniff another contract even approaching the $18.5 million in guarantees he got from the Bears."
Arizona signed Glennon in March for two years to a deal worth $8 million, according to Over The Cap. Glennon will get an opportunity as the back up quarterback. Does he have the tools to distinguish himself from Bradford and Rosen?
He understands his current role in Arizona. Perhaps he sticks as the third quarterback as injury insurance in case Bradford or Rosen are hurt. Kyle Odegard of AZCardinals.com quotes Glennon’s thoughts:
"“I’ve been in that backup role more than the starter, so I’m comfortable with it,” Glennon said. “I understand my role, and what my job is to help this team. That’s to both compete and help these two guys out.”"

Seems like he knows that he is the odd man out but will do what he needs to do. Arizona needs players like Glennon to exhibit team leader roles. Let’s see how training camp progresses in the next chapter of Glennon’s career.
