Back in 2016, the Washington Redskins used a second-round selection on USC defensive prospect Su’a Cravens. As a rookie, he appeared in 11 games and finished with 33 tackles, one interception, one sack and five interceptions. As he prepared for his second season, there were a number of issues and when it was all said and done, he spent 2017 on the team’s reserve/left squad list. Cravens’ NFL future appeared to be very much in doubt.

Then in March, the versatile prospect was back in the league and suddenly headed to a different team. The ‘Skins sent Cravens and a pair of 2018 draft choices to the Denver Broncos for three picks in 2018 and a sixth-round selection in 2020. It’s a new start for an intriguing athlete who could help Vance Joseph’s defense in numerous ways.

“I expect to compete for a starting job no matter where I’m at,” said the 22-year-old defender to Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post a few weeks before April’s draft. “I feel like I have the talent to start. I’m not expecting a starting job, but I’m going to put my head down and work and hopefully that’s the outcome.

Denver’s defense did give up the third-fewest total yards in the NFL this past season but all was not right with this unit. Cravens joins a club looking to rebound from a rough year and apparently feels like he’s in the right place.

“I wanted to play football where somebody wanted me. I can tell that Denver actually wanted me on the team. It wasn’t just, ‘This is smart for our team.’ It just seemed like they really felt like they could use me and felt like they could put me in the best position to be successful.”
