No matter what any pundit says, former New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is a lock to get a bust in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is supposed to be for the best of all time. There’s no doubt that former New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis should make his way to Canton someday and bring Revis Island to the Hall of Fame.

FS1’s Skip Bayless said that he’s not a lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and so did his partner, Hall-of-Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe. They’re both dead wrong.

Did his career end terribly? Absolutely, but he’s undoubtedly one of the best. Gil Brandt, a former NFL executive, asked the following question:

Here’s a question for Brandt: How many times were those guys targeted during their careers.

According to Pro Football Focus, Revis was targeted a total of 791 times in 145 career regular season games. That amounts to an average of being targeted around five times per game. (If you want as close to an exact number as you can get, it’s 5.4551724137931034482758620689655 per game.)

Sure, when you look at career interceptions he doesn’t stack up against the members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. However, when you stack him up against Deion Sanders, it’s not even close. Sanders only had 10 pass breakups in his career, which gives him a total of 63 pass breakups and interceptions combined.

The job of a cornerback isn’t just to get interceptions. His job is to stop his man from getting the ball. Revis did that as well, if not better, than anyone in the history of the NFL.

In the end, people will look at the interception numbers, and discount what he meant to both the New York Jets and New England Patriots when he was still in his physical prime. He took away half of the field. There was no point in even throwing to his side of the field.

A bust is coming to Canton, and Revis Island will find a permanent home in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
