The Green Bay Packers have three running backs that are expected to be used at a decent clip this year. Ty Montgomery is the best bet in fantasy football though.

The Green Bay Packers 2018 offense will more than likely prominently feature three running backs. Aaron Jones and Ty Montgomery, as well as Jamaal Williams should all get their fair-share of playing time. All three have positives and negatives to their game that creates the need for the trio. This creates a problem for fantasy players, as it will be hard to rely on any of them for much. One stands above the others as the safest bet though.

Jones flashed major potential last season, averaging 5.5 yards per carry and scoring four touchdowns in limited time. He only carried the ball 81 times though, and benefited from some big games (and runs). In fact, there were more bad fantasy days than good ones for the rookie last season.

The topper however, is the two-game suspension he’s serving to start the season. There’s no telling what kind of role he’ll be given upon his return, especially if one of the other running backs takes control in the first two weeks.

Williams is the only one of the trio to appear in all 16 regular season games last season for the Packers. Due to this, he led the team in carries and receptions. However, his production wasn’t exactly eye-opening. Despite leading the team in both categories, his statistics weren’t much better than the other two.

Last year, Williams carried the ball 153 times, almost double the amount Jones did. He only produced 108 more yards and no more touchdowns than Jones though. Meanwhile, his 25 receptions were only one two more than Montgomery, despite Montgomery appearing in eight less games.

Montgomery’s biggest concern is staying on the field. He appeared in just eight games last season. In 2016 however, he played in 15 and looked fantastic in a consistent role at running back.

He’s not the best pure runner of the three (I’d put him third in fact). Montgomery does however have big play potential and is easily the best receiver of the group. That’s the most important attribute for a Green Bay running back at the moment. The Packers won’t want to take the ball out of Aaron Rodgers‘ hands too often. That means this is clearly a pass-heavy offense. Therefore, a running back that can create havoc in the passing game is the one that should get the most time.

None of these running backs should be your number one on a fantasy team. They all bring value to the Green Bay Packers, but that diminishes their fantasy value. However, if you feel the need to take one — it’s Ty Montgomery that gives you the most defined role.
