New York Jets: Ranking the top 5 players in franchise history
2. Darrelle Revis
Some have said that Revis dominated his position like no one else in the history of the franchise. (We’ll get to that sentiment at No. 1.) I agree when it comes to just the cornerback position. He was probably the best to every play the cornerback position.
When Revis was at his best, he shadowed the best receiver on the other team. He shut down half the field, and very rarely did quarterbacks throw his way. According to Pro Football Focus, when they did throw his way, they weren’t successful. He allowed only a 51 percent catch rate.
He took away half the field, and opponents knew it. Sure, he had “only” 29 career interceptions, but it’s hard to pile up interceptions when teams aren’t even throwing your way.
He was a dominant force that teams had to prepare for. That’s still a rare anomaly from the cornerback position. It’s still a rarity for someone to shadow the best receiver on the opposing team, and still even more rare for someone to be targeted as little as Revis was.
Even with his dominance he isn’t in the NFL record books like the best player in franchise history is.
