Seattle Seahawks: Top 5 offseason additions, post 2018 NFL Draft
4. Sebastian Janikowski, PK (from Oakland Raiders)
The last time an NFL team used a first-round pick on a placekicker was 2000. Under head coach Jon Gruden and led by Pro Football Hall of Fame contributor Al Davis, the Oakland Raiders opted for Florida State’s Sebastian Janikowski with the 17th overall pick that year.
Nearly two decades later, the former Seminole is still in the league. But a year ago, Janikowski missed the year due to injury. Understandably, the Silver and Black wound up going in a different direction. And when the time came for the organization to re-up with the reliable specialist, they let the veteran of 17 NFL seasons hit the free-agent market.
Janikowski ranks 11th in league annals in scoring with 1,799 points. And only nine players have connected on more field goals (414) than the 40-year old native of Walbrzych, Poland. This past season, one-time Minnesota Vikings’ performer Blair Walsh led the team with 100 points but was erratic when it came to field goals. Three of his eight misses came between 30-39 yards. He remains an unsigned free agent.
Meanwhile, Janikowski will compete with Jason Myers (who spent 3 seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2015-17) for the Seahawks’ kicking job. Look for the wily veteran to emerge the victor here.
