New York Jets: Chad Hansen breakout season would be perfect timing
A Chad Hansen breakout season would put the New York Jets in the ultimate win-win situation heading into 2019.
Many fans of the New York Jets look at Robby Anderson as the No. 1 receiver. Many also look at next year’s draft as a tough one to navigate given that they only have six picks (at the moment) and no second-round pick as a result of the trade up for Sam Darnold.
However, if second-year wide receiver Chad Hansen is progressing like many people say he is, it puts the Jets in the driver’s seat for their future in 2019.
Imagine a scenario where we keep the good depth we have at receiver and still get that second round pick back in 2019. Well, if Terrelle Pryor and Quincy Enunwa are both healthy and they sign them and Jermaine Kearse, they could re-sign both and go into 2019 with the top four receivers of Enunwa, Pryor, Kearse, and Hansen.
Where’s Anderson? In this scenario, they lose him to free agency, but all isn’t lost if that were to happen.
Anderson is a restricted free agent in 2019. That means there are limits in his negotiations, but it puts the Jets in a situation to get their second-round pick back. The Jets can give Anderson a second round tender. That means if a team signs Anderson to an offer sheet, and the Jets don’t match the offer, they get a second round pick.
With their current depth at wide receiver and needs elsewhere, this may be the best course of action for the future. This is only if Hansen can prove himself in 2018. Anderson may be talented, but if there isn’t much of a drop off in talent by letting him go, and the Jets can improve other areas, they must do it.

The Jets are in a position to build for multiple years, not just focus on winning now. So, if they can get a second round pick back without giving up other draft picks, they must do it. Yes, they might be giving up talent, but they also will be getting something in return. Thus, it’s not a complete loss. It’s a perfect situation, a win-win.
