Washington Redskins: 5 Players to watch in 2018 training camp
No. 5: Montae Nicholson
The Redskins weren’t quite sure what they were getting in 2017 fourth-round pick Montae Nicholson. Then, Nicholson continually impressed coaches throughout the offseason and into training camp, earning a significant role early in the season. Nicholson showed a knack for being able to separate receivers from the ball, while also displaying the range Washington has missed at safety since the late Sean Taylor patrolled the secondary.
Now, that’s not to say Nicholson is Sean Taylor. He isn’t. No one is. However, Nicholson’s combination of size, smarts and athleticism could make him a star. Unfortunately, Nicholson must be able to stay on the field. As a rookie, Nicholson played in just eight games as he battled a shoulder injury and a concussion. The shoulder issues began just before the draft and Nicholson never fully healed.
Nicholson is a physical player capable of playing either free or strong safety for the Redskins. Last year was a banner year for rookie safeties and Nicholson was right there with players who were drafted significantly higher.
In the offseason, head coach Jay Gruden spoke of Nicholson in glowing terms, saying he was as important to the defense as Jordan Reed was to the offense. That’s high praise. If you want to see how impactful Reed is to the offense go back and watch Reed from 2015.
The Redskins need a healthy Nicholson after losing two starting cornerbacks from a year ago.
