During the Super Bowl era the Philadelphia Eagles have had a lot of success. But what are the top five seasons to be remembered?

When looking back at the history of the NFL, everybody seems to forget that football was actually played before the Super Bowl Era began in 1966. And really, the pre-Super Bowl days were when the Philadelphia Eagles were most successful. Three championships in 33 years is considered a hot streak in Philadelphia, unfortunately.

The Eagles started as a franchise in the NFL in 1933 and it wasn’t good from the get-go. They didn’t have a winning record in any of their first ten years in the league. Then things took a turn for the better under Head Coach Greasy Neale, yes that is the greatest coach name ever. In 1948 and 1949, they were able to win back-to-back NFL Championships behind Neale and the legs of Hall of Fame halfback Steve Van Buren.

The Eagles remained a decent team throughout most of the 1950s, but were never able to put everything together until 1960. With Hall of Famers Norm Van Brocklin and Chuck Bednarik, leading the way they were able to win another NFL Championship, handing Vince Lombardi his only career playoff loss as head coach for the Green Bay Packers.

That very brief history of the Eagles franchise (pre-Super Bowl) brings us to the heart of this article, what were the best seasons in Eagles history during the Super Bowl era?
