They may want to throw Jackson into the fire

If Jackson excels in the limited role as an offensive spark, it will undoubtedly cause a rift in the locker room. The Ravens’ plan to use Jackson in certain situations will only give the front office more confidence in moving on from Flacco. They’ll have more than enough tape to warrant the decision, especially if he succeeds.

We saw what a dynamic quarterback can do for a team’s offense in Houston with the Texans. Furthermore, Flacco will count for over $20 million against the cap next season — so the Ravens are likely to cut him and save more than $10 million. So, who’s to say they won’t use the second half of the season to see what Jackson can do?

The Baltimore Ravens sent a message to Joe Flacco saying he’s on borrowed time after taking Lamar Jackson in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Although Flacco appears to the starting quarterback entering training camp, Jackson is breathing down his neck already and fighting for time on the field.

Jackson’s reign may happen sooner than initially expected. No matter what, however, Flacco currently gives them the best chance to win. The question is how short of a leash is the one-time Super Bowl winning quarterback on?

The Ravens will kick off the preseason against the Chicago Bears Aug. 2.
