Miami Dolphins: 2018 Training camp stock watch, Day 1
Stock Down
Brock Osweiler
This has been pretty much unanimous. Nobody stood out in a worse way on Day 1 than Brock Osweiler. You get the vibe that Gase wants him to step up and be the backup to Tannehill, but that’s already looking like a long shot. The former Broncos quarterback looked bad early and often. His inaccuracy has been embarrassing and he is being clearly out played by David Fales, who is mediocre at best in his own right.
It’s still early. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t expect Osweiler to be make the 53-man roster unless something drastic happens. OTAs were not good to him and camp doesn’t appear to be getting any better. We will keep an eye on this and update you if anything changes, but I have no intentions of just reporting that Osweiler is terrible everyday. Just assume that unless you hear otherwise at this point.
Rush Defense
You can look at this as both a positive and a negative. The fact that they lost Ndamukong Suh this offseason makes this a bit scary. However, it could also be a good sign that the offensive line is actually playing well. The rush defense was pushed around and gashed, by Gore particularly, but it remains to be seen how much of that was bad defense and how much was good offense. Odds are it was a little bit of both.
Either way, we would like to see the defense improve. Miami will look for their young defensive tackles to step up and they should have more support from the linebackers behind them this year. Something this line has not had in a few years. We will keep a close eye on how this front seven develops over the next few weeks. Not just against the run, but the pass as well.
