Arizona Cardinals: Training camp welcomes new faces on defense
By Larry Brake
The Arizona Cardinals have added new faces to the defense as training camp is starting.
The Arizona Cardinals have added three new faces on defense, just in time for the opening of training camp. Two defensive ends and a safety were signed to one year deals. Apparently, the Cardinals wanted to add depth to the roster.
Arthur Moats signed with Arizona after spending the last four seasons in Pittsburgh. Originally, he was picked by Buffalo in the 2010 NFL Draft. In his career, he has started 45 games and has had 16.5 sacks with 202 total tackles. Moats will add depth to the defense and special teams, according to Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com.
Jacquies Smith is another addition to the Cardinals defense. Urban details Smith’s career:
"Smith has spent time with the Dolphins, Jets, Bills and Buccaneers as well as the Lions, compiling 13 ½ career sacks since 2012. He totaled all those sacks in two Tampa Bay seasons – 2014 and 2015 – and has appeared in just four regular-season games the last two years."
Tre Boston is the biggest signee heading into training camp. Boston is a big physical presence at free safety. He stands six foot tall weighing 204 pounds. Boston was selected by Carolina in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL draft. Last season he played for the Los Angeles Chargers. He intercepted five passes and was in on a total of 104 tackles.
Most of all, Boston has played for Steve Wilks in Carolina. Wilks served as the defensive coordinator and coached the defensive backs. Wilks is quoted by Urban, on the team website, concerning Boston:
"“(Tre) has our DNA,” Wilks said, after Boston officially signed his one-year contract with the Cardinals earlier in the day. “He’ll fit in our locker room and fit well with Antoine Bethea and Budda Baker back there.”"
As expected, Wilks is beginning to put his fingerprint on the defense. The offense reflects Mike McCoy system of attack. The newest era of Cardinals football is on the horizon, it’s going to be a fun season to watch.
