2019 NFL Mock Draft: Defensive line rules at start of training camp

20. Kansas City Chiefs: Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Florida, S
During free agency, the Kansas City Chiefs made a big move for linebacker Anthony Hitchens. Adding him next to Reggie Ragland gives them a much better group of interior linebackers. They also landed an underrated nose tackle in Derrick Nnadi in the draft, helping their defense stay strong.
They may have some issues in the secondary though after getting rid of Marcu Peters and losing Terrance Mitchell in free agency. Getting Kendall Fuller int he Alex Smith trade did at least soften the blow.
In the 2019 NFL Draft, they could look to add some more help back there still. While corner is a possibility, the Chiefs could also get themselves another safety. Eric Berry is still a stud, but they could upgrade who starts alongside him.
Chauncey Gardner-Johnson ends up getting a chance to land that job as Kansas City takes him with their pick in Round 1. Listed at 6-0 and 207 pounds, Gardner-Johnson has the size needed to play physical football and was a good defender against the run for the Gators in 2017.
He’s not a liability in the passing game either. He was able to pick off two passes for them in 2017 and showed an ability to stick with receivers and tight ends in pass coverage. Working with Berry will only help him reach his potential even faster.
