Arizona Cardinals: Sam Bradford is in control of his destiny
By Larry Brake
Sam Bradford’s job as the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals will depend upon his performance.
The Arizona Cardinals revamped their roster over the 2018 offseason. They have three quarterbacks on the current roster, but they all played elsewhere last season. Many projected an open competition for the starting quarterback job during training camp.
Arizona selected Josh Rosen this spring in the NFL Draft. Rosen is figured, by many, to soon be the staring quarterback. The question is, when will he be given the job?
Mike Glennon and Sam Bradford are the other two quarterbacks on the roster. Glennon is hoping to resurrect his career. Bradford is hoping to stay healthy.
Bradford has the unique distinction as signing the largest rookie contract ever. He signed a deal worth $76 million in 2010, according to therichest.com. In March, he signed with Arizona on a one-year deal worth $20 million with $15 million in guaranteed money, per spotrac.com. Seems like a large contract for a player who is often injured. He has missed 48 games since his rookie season in 2010. Last season, he played in only two games.
Before training camp opened, the conventional wisdom figured that Bradford would hold the reins until Rosen was ready to take over. Apparently, there is no competition for the starting spot but for the backup position.
Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com reported the following from head coach Steve Wilks:
"“Competition across the board makes you better and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Wilks said. “I want Josh with the mentality he wants to start. “I don’t waver that Sam is our starter. It’s his job to lose.” As for the backup spot, “it’s still open,” Wilks said."
Bradford is clearly in control of his own destiny. Wonder what he would have to do to lose the starting position? Would the change occur before the regular season begins?
Historically, staying healthy is a problem for Bradford. It could be that Wilks is really looking at Rosen or Glennon to lead the Cardinals. Its going to be an interesting training camp. Let’s see how it unfolds.
