For years, some of the Washington Redskins’ young running backs have been built up as potential superstars. First it was Matt Jones, who now seems destined for an end to his NFL career. Then it was Samaje Perine, who was already replaced as the lead back in D.C.

We’ve been fooled already, but we won’t be fooled

twice. That’s because Derrius Guice has the makings of a legitimate starting running back who could soon take the NFL by storm. He’s already expected to be the top dog in the Washington backfield, and has earned the fantasy respect that comes with that.

Guice could turn into quite the steal for the Redskins. They only had to spend a second-round pick to get a player who many saw as the second-best running back in the 2018 draft class. If he can live up to the hype that followed him during his final year at LSU, we could soon be witnessing the emergence of the next great D.C. runner.

There’s always some risk involved with rookie running backs. The early word out of Washington, though, is that Guice is the real deal. I’m sure his fantasy owners will be hoping that’s the case when the regular season rolls around, because he’s coming off the board quick.
