New York Jets: 3 Reasons Sam Darnold deal needs to happen immediately
By Dan Parzych
3. Darnold needs the practice
When looking at the impact he made over the years as a member of the Trojans, it became pretty clear early on in Darnold’s career that it was only a matter of time before he was ready to make the transition to the NFL level. There’s a reason why Darnold was considered one of the top quarterbacks from this year’s draft class, and while only time will determine whether he lives up to the hype, he still has a long way to go.
Between the fact that he’s playing on an offense like the Jets that seems to be a work in progress heading into 2018 along with the adjustments most rookies experience, Darnold needs all of the help he can get before September hits. Training camp is one of the most important times of the season since it gives players an opportunity to develop the necessary chemistry before the start of the regular season, and since Darnold is a rookie, this means he’s even more behind than most players holding out.
The longer the negotiating takes for a deal, the more valuable time Darnold misses in training camp to work with his new teammates. So if the Jets want to make sure that Darnold receives the necessary time in training camp he clearly needs, maybe they could figure out a way to speed this whole process up with agreeing to a contract.
