Defensive Player of the Year: Jalen Ramsey, CB, Jacksonville Jaguars
Recently, the Jacksonville Jaguars went from one of the worst pass coverage teams to one of the best. There were several reasons for such a jump which included additions to both the front seven and the back end of the defense.
With defensive end Calais Campbell having a career-year rushing the passer, the ball was having to come out much quicker than normal. That’s where guys like safety Barry Church and cornerbacks A.J. Bouye and Jalen Ramsey all got to work.
While the credit should be spread around, Ramsey had a lot to do with their turnaround. Not only is he a talented press corner who can run with any receiver in the game, but he brings a swagger to the defense that’s much needed.
A huge part of winning games is believing you can — and no one has confidence quite like the former first-round pick out of Florida State. Entering his third season, Ramsey is ready to showcase just how far he’s come. He will also start to get more recognition now that the Jags are a winning ball club.
On the strength of their defense, Jacksonville made it to the AFC Championship game and nearly knocked off the New England Patriots. Another year like he had with them and some hardware could be coming his way.
