Mike McCoy is currently designing the Arizona Cardinals offense to fit the talent on the roster.

The Arizona Cardinals have begun the re-boot under the direction of new head coach Steve Wilks. He has brought in new coaches with new schemes and systems. Mike McCoy is the new offensive coordinator with the task of igniting the Cardinals attack.

McCoy has coached in Carolina, Denver and San Diego. He was the head coach in San Diego after four seasons in Denver as their offensive coordinator. McCoy knows offensive football, very well.

The obvious question is, what style of offense will Arizona run? Maybe the question should be, who influenced McCoy the most? There are three basic offenses that NFL teams use: west coast, air-Coryell and Erhardt-Perkins.

Bill Walsh built the west coast offense to perfection in San Francisco. Don Coryell, who should be in the Hall of Fame, created the air-Coryell. Chuck Fairbanks had two guys in New England that masterminded the Erhardt-Perkins style of offense, according to Chris B. Brown of Grantland.com.

Brown quotes McCoy in his 2013 article:

"…“football’s always football,” …“Everyone’s running the same plays, and it’s a matter of some running one concept more than another team is. It all boils down to the same thing.”"

The challenge will be designing the Arizona offense to fit the current roster. Whether Sam Bradford or Josh Rosen is the signal caller, there can not be a drop-off between the players. The Cardinals will have to score points and move the chains.

McCoy inherits two star players in Larry Fitzgerald and David Johnson. However, he hasn’t spent any time with Bradford or Rosen and even Mike Glennon. Katherine Fitzgerald of AZCentral.com reported the following:

"Much of the offense will center around Johnson, but for now, McCoy is treating camp like a science experiment, testing out all variables for the best result."

Expect the Cardinals offense to change from week to week, especially early on. McCoy’s biggest challenge will be to fuse all his weapons into a systematic offensive juggernaut. Let’s see how fast McCoy gets things going, it should be a fantastic ride.
