Los Angeles Rams: Cooper Kupp safe fantasy pick, but…
By Hunter Noll
The NFL regular season is about a month away. That means fantasy football drafts are even closer. Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp looks to be a solid choice if you want steady production.
Wide receiver Cooper Kupp enjoyed a strong rookie season for the Los Angeles Rams last year. There are plenty of reasons to believe he’ll improve in 2018 as well. This makes him a safe fantasy pick as someone who can guarantee your team decent production on a weekly basis.
With that being said though, if you plan on relying on the receiver for monster performances – don’t do that. Kupp recorded 62 receptions for 869 yards and five touchdowns last season. His own progression, as well as quarterback Jared Goff‘s, means those numbers could improve. That coupled with the fact that Kupp had very few poor fantasy weeks last season is encouraging.
However, Kupp also only had two 100-plus receiving yard games, and just one outing where he totaled more than six receptions. He also never posted a multi-touchdown performance. Meanwhile, the Rams have two tight ends (most notably Gerald Everett) who should see their targets and production take a heavy jump in 2018.
Then of course, there’s the addition of Brandin Cooks. He should demand the most targets in the offense, while Robert Woods deserves plenty after a breakout season as well.
This leaves Kupp with a ceiling when it comes to fantasy production. The Rams’ offense is too good for the receiver to truly standout as a beast in fantasy. However, the role he plays in that offense will give him a solid floor fantasy-wise as well.
Kupp won’t be the massive red zone target (see Everett), while Cooks and Woods will be relied on more for big plays. But Kupp will get those short targets. This will keep him from laying any eggs in fantasy (especially PPR leagues). He has the athleticism to create big plays as well though, which will help him in non-PPR leagues. If fantasy owners are looking for a wide receiver they can take in the mid-late rounds and feel they can trust for decent outputs on a weekly basis – Cooper Kupp is their man.
