Los Angeles Rams: How big of a role could Sam Shields play?
By Hunter Noll
The Los Angeles Rams made quite a few major moves this offseason. But the addition of cornerback Sam Shields has flown below the radar. What exactly he bring to the team?
Cornerback Sam Shields appeared in one game back in the 2016 NFL season. Since then, he’s been out of commission. However, prior to injuries (namely concussions) Shields was a defensive force for the Green Bay Packers. He had major play-making ability, but could also lock down a receiver at the same time.
This offseason, Shields was able to return to the field and promptly signed with the Los Angeles Rams. This might’ve been bigger news had the Rams not traded for both Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib.
Shields probably won’t be as dominant as he was before the layoff. At 30 years old, there should still be plenty left in the tank. While this seems like an uphill climb, remember the University of Miami product came into the league as an undrafted free agent. Overcoming obstacles is nothing new for him.
Shields isn’t about to take a starting spot from Talib or Peters. Meanwhile, Nickell Robey-Coleman will occupy the slot. However, there’s still a place on the team for the veteran. Shields is a fantastic mixture of speed and physicality, as well as instincts and skill.
The defensive back has the versatility to play both outside and in the slot at corner. He also has the skills to take reps at safety as well. This is perfect for the Rams, who have plenty of talent when it comes to starting defensive backs. But they lack something in the depth department and that’s exactly what Shields can bring to the team.
At his best, he was a lockdown cornerback with big-play potential. If he can bring that back, that’s just icing on the cake. For now though, the Los Angeles Rams need depth at the defensive back position. Sam Shields has the potential to be a super-utility man in the secondary, providing help wherever’s needed. That makes him the perfect depth piece.
