New York Jets: Game-by-game predictions for 2018
Week 2: vs. Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins had one of the worst overall defenses in the NFL in 2017. In terms of overall grading by Pro Football Focus (subscription required), only one defense was worse — the Jets. The difference here is the Jets upgraded all three levels of the defense, and the Dolphins only upgraded one.
Not only were they the second-worst overall defense, but they had the third worst coverage grade. Even though they drafted Minkah Fitzpatrick, they still didn’t do enough to rebuild the rest of the defense or secondary to be competitive. (It shouldn’t be a shock if this team challenges for the No. 1 overall pick in 2019.)
In terms of offensive weapons, they are limited. Their top two option in the passing game are rookie tight end Mike Gesicki and Danny Amendola. Both are unproven in different ways — Gesicki being a rookie and Amendola being a No. 1 target.
In the end, the Jets will have too much firepower on offense for the Dolphins to match, and Darnold will light up the scoreboard with multiple touchdowns. The Jets will be able to sit on the ball in the fourth quarter and go head to Cleveland with a big victory.
Final Score
Dolphins 17, Jets 31
