Detroit Lions: Running Back
Year after year the Detroit Lions seem to need to get things figured out at running back. Ameer Abdullah never rounded into the player they hoped he would be and their ground game continued to suffer because of it. During this most recent offseason, they set out to change that.
First, they brought in a talented veteran with a history of production. LeGarrette Blount may be 31 years old, but he’s just one season removed from leading the NFL in touchdowns. With New England in 2016, he had 18 scores on the ground and 1,161 yards.
His yardage and touchdowns were much lower with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 as he rushed for 766 yards and two scores — but did see his yards per carry increase to 4.4. At worst, he offers the Lions a competent back who can move the chains.
Blount isn’t guaranteed to start though. He’ll be in competition with rookie Kerryon Johnson, who was a stud at Auburn. He could very well find a way to become the lead back for the Lions this season, but the good news for fans is they finally have a battle of players who can handle the job rather than just looking for who can do enough to get on the field.
