NFL 2018: Every team’s biggest training camp battle
By Randy Gurzi
Kansas City Chiefs: Secondary
This offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs may have turned a strength into a question. They traded away their best player in Marcus Peters, which thinned out their cornerback position.
Yes, they completely fleeced the Washington Redskins in the deal for Alex Smith as Washington gave up a third-round pick and a starting corner for a guy we all knew wasn’t staying in K.C., but that may not be enough.
Kendall Fuller has made a living as a slot corner and the Chiefs now look questionable on the edges. Steven Nelson is their most experienced starter so they need someone to step up opposite him.
Safety is also a battle to watch. While Eric Berry has one of the two jobs locked down — health willing — they could use an upgrade next to him. Daniel Sorenson had the majority of the snaps but was less than spectacular. He will have to outlast Eric Murray and rookie Armani Watts if he wants to remain the starter.
In years past, the defense has been a huge strength for Kansas City and it still could be. They just have to figure out the best possible combination of corners and safeties during camp and the preseason games.
