NFL 2018: Every team’s biggest training camp battle

Los Angeles Chargers: Tight End
The Los Angeles Chargers were turning the page on a position of strength this offseason, and it has now become one of the most open battles the team has. To be fair, this wasn’t their plan.
After having Antonio Gates line up at tight end every season since 2003, the Chargers were ready to turn things over to Hunter Henry. Unlike the earlier mentioned Cowboys, they actually had a succession plan for losing one of the best tight ends in the game and it was still going to be a position of strength because Henry had put together two-straight strong campaigns while working with Gates.
Now with Gates gone, Henry is the man. Or he would be, had he not torn his ACL. Now Virgil Green becomes their most experienced player and names like Braedon Bowman, Ben Johnson, and Sean Culkin hope to get into the mix.
Of course, adding Gates back is also an option and quarterback Philip Rivers has been adamant about wanting that to happen. L.A. probably wants to see how the players they do have work out first though before going back to their old friend. Although, Gates really isn’t the worst fall back plan despite being 38 years old.
