Buffalo Bills: Quarterback

One of the few teams to draft an early quarterback and not shout from the rooftops that he won’t play as a rookie is the Buffalo Bills. They made some moves in the 2018 NFL Draft to get into the top-10 and rumors are they wanted to get to No. 5 in order to secure Josh Allen’s services. As fate would have it, they were able to get the Wyoming gunslinger at No. 7. And now Allen is fighting for a job.

The reason his position is wide open is that the talent isn’t there. Allen has way more upside than anyone on the roster as he features a cannon for an arm and incredible mobility for such a large man. He’s also got the ability to flick his wrist on the run and watch the ball rifle 70 yards downfield. That’s some rare talent.

Ideally, Buffalo would like to hone his skills before throwing him to the wolves. That may not happen though because the guys ahead of him are average at best. The coaching staff seems to love Nathan Peterman, but his five-interceptions in two quarters nearly cost them their season in 2017. He’s not the guy even though head coach Sean McDermott has rose-colored glasses for him.

There’s also A.J. McCarron, who at least never completely blew a game for his franchise. In fact, McCarron kept the Cincinnati Bengals afloat back in 2015 when Andy Dalton went down with a hand injury. He threw six touchdowns and just two picks and can at least be a game manager.

It will be interesting to watch and see which of the three rises to the top in Western New York.
