1. Defense

I never thought I’d see the day when the Atlanta Falcons are Super Bowl contenders because of their talented defense, but here we are. I understand that most people are riding with this 2018 Dirty Birds team because of Matt Ryan and the team’s high-flying offense, but if we’re truly looking at why this team can win the title, it’s because of their up-and-coming defense.

There are many people who’ve been tough on former offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, and his play-calling in the late-stages of Super Bowl 51. While I do agree with most of those arguments, the Falcons would’ve beaten the Patriots if they had a defense that could finish.

Unfortunately, that 2016-2017 defense had a handful of rookies and was missing their best cornerback, Desmond Trufant. Thankfully for Dan Quinn, this 2018 defense finally has enough talent and experience to become those ‘finishers’, assuming that they’re relatively healthy going into the postseason.

Again, when the Falcons finally win their first championship, we’ll also be talking about how stellar their defense played all evening. Call me crazy, but I think we’ll be having that conversation in February of 2019.
