Football is back, and for the Dallas Cowboys, it is time to put a season that didn’t live up to expectations, and another offseason that had some off-the-field issues, on the back burner and look forward to a season that isn’t guaranteed to be really good or really bad.

Going into the first preseason game of the season with the Cowboys facing the San Francisco 49ers, there are still questions surrounding the Cowboys’ roster, including who will be the top backup choice at quarterback, who will be the first choice as the reserve running back and also on offense who will stand out at the wide receiver position.

It is important to remember that this is just the first preseason game for the Cowboys, so that means we won’t see much of starters like Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, Sean Lee and many others. That’s OK, because there is a lot to watch and look forward to with this first preseason game, especially with some of the younger players on the roster.

This is a game to be excited about to watch rookies like wide receiver Michael Gallup, quarterback Mike White and most likely first-round selection outside linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. Also, it will be important to watch the tight end position, because with the retirement of Jason Witten, it will be very interesting to see just how the Cowboys replace the future Hall of Famer.

With that said, the game kicks off on Thursday night at 10 p.m. ET on NFL Network, so right from the start, the Cowboys will be playing on a national stage yet again. Here are three things to watch for the Cowboys in Week 1 of the preseason.
