The Minnesota Vikings used a 2016 first-round pick on Laquon Treadwell. After a few disappointing seasons, things are finally looking up for the wide receiver in 2018.

When Laquon Treadwell was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings with the 23rd overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft, fans were beyond ecstatic that he even fell that far. But after two seasons of barely seeing the field, the expectations for Treadwell are now at an all-time low. That was, until this offseason.

With only 21 receptions for 215 yards in 25 games, Treadwell’s performance on the field has been disappointing to say the least. That being said, wide receivers sometimes take a few seasons to gain their stride in an offense, and Mike Zimmer has never been known for letting rookies see the field until they’re absolutely ready.

There must have been a serious talk this offseason, though, because Treadwell has taken it upon himself to make a concerted effort to get better – and many are taking notice. In fact, coach Mike Zimmer stated publicly that Treadwell ‘needs to get out of his own way’ and that Treadwell is ‘doing the right things’.

Apparently Treadwell took Zimmer’s comments to heart. Since reporting to training camp on July 28, the Vikings have been mightily impressed with Treadwell’s progress. “He had a great OTAs and minicamp, and he’s off to a great start at training camp.” Kirk Cousins said of Treadwell in his presser last week. “I’m excited to see what he grows into this year. He’s getting a lot of reps and a lot of looks.”

Not only has Treadwell looked the part, but the Vikings desperately need him to show out this season. Of course, Minnesota can count on Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen to get theirs, but the NFL is a passing league and two receivers are not enough.

Luckily for the Vikings, Treadwell has cemented himself as the favorite to be the No. 3 receiver after the first unofficial depth chart was released on Tuesday. Treadwell figures to have a much larger role in the Vikings’ offense this season, and being listed as the third starter is a great sign of things to come.
