Green Bay Packers: 5 underdogs who could make final roster
By Joe Kipp
1. Jake Kumerow, Wide Receiver
Who would have thought Jake Kumerow would be one of biggest standouts of the offseason just three months ago? Kumerow, who’s already been in the league for three seasons, was originally signed by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2015. The Packers eventually scooped him up in January.
At first glance, everyone – even Brian Gutekunst – likely thought Kumerow would have just been a ‘camp body’. But here we are in the third week of training camp, and Kumerow has been arguably the biggest stand-out so far.
Kumerow stands at 6-4, 210 lbs, and ran a 4.54 forty-yard dash at his Pro Day, along with recording a 31-inch vertical and 6.90-second 3-cone-drill. For a man of his stature, those numbers will suffice.
But sometimes those numbers don’t even matter. After all, it’s the eye-test that matters most to coaches. Not only has Kumerow been impressing his coaching staff, but Aaron Rodgers has taken notice as well. Kumerow has been rotating in with the first-team.
Kumerow was also listed as the No. 4 receiver on the Packers’ first unofficial depth chart earlier this week.
Provided he keeps forming a connection with Rodgers and has an above-average preseason, expect to see Kumerow on the opening day roster.
