In the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans and the Kansas City Chiefs both made bold moves for the future of their franchise. For Houston, they decided to trade a multitude of draft picks to move up and take Deshaun Watson to be their quarterback of the future. Meanwhile, Kansas City did the same as they moved up for a bevy of picks and nabbed Patrick Mahomes. Now we’ll see these two teams squaring off in the 2018 NFL preseason.
Watson lit the world on fire for the Texans when he was given the chance to go last season. The then-rookie was putting up numbers like we’ve honestly never seen before and seemed on track to win Rookie of the Year by a mile. However, he then tore his ACL in practice and all of that came to a halt. Now he appears on track to return to the field and lead the offense at 100 percent health. Having said that, we might not see that on Thursday due to it being the preseason.
We’re much more likely to see the Chiefs give us a large glimpse of Mahomes in this game. Unlike is draft classmate, Mahomes spent almost all of last season — save for a Week 17 start that meant nothing — on the bench. Now he’s fully been given the reins of this Kansas City team with the hopes that he can take them to another level on offense. If you think another level is a scary concept when you’re talking about a group that now includes Sammy Watkins, Tyreek Hill, Kareem Hunt and Travis Kelce, you’d be right.

We can only hope that Watson-Mahomes makes Texans vs. Chiefs a rivalry for years to come. This may be a game that means nothing in the preseason, but it could be the prequel to something awesome.
