The Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Chargers are two teams that find themselves in very different positions. On one hand, Arizona is in a period of transition with the in-tune retirements of Bruce Arians and Carson Palmer this offeseason. Meanwhile, Los Angeles has the makings of a team that could go on a run at a championship this season. As such, it’s a fun clash of circumstance in Week 1 of the 2018 NFL preseason.
With the retirements that the Cardinals were asked to withstand this offseason, they have done a good job trying to remain competitive. They first went out and signed veteran Sam Bradford and then lucked into a trade that allowed them to select Josh Rosen in the 2018 draft. With David Johnson returning after being injured last year in addition to Larry Fitzgerald and a strong defense still being around, this is a different team, but still a dangerous one.
Bad luck has plagued the Chargers in recent years and there’s no doubt that they’ve already started to see some of that again this offseason as they’ve lost both Hunter Henry and Jason Verrett to season-ending injuries already. Even still, with Philip Rivers still in control of the offense and Joey Bosa leading the defense, there’s no reason to believe that this team can’t compete with anyone in the league.

Playing out West, both the Cardinals and Chargers will have a chance to sneak up on some teams this season. Of course, they both also have a high level of variance in terms of their potential outcomes in 2018. To get things headed in the right direction though, they need to start strongly and smoothly in the preseason.
