1. RB Roc Thomas

The offseason departure of Jerick McKinnon hurt. It left the Vikings without a true passing-down back, which as we all know has become an integral part of every NFL offense. No replacement was signed via free agency, so the Vikings went looking for a new third-down back after the draft.

It appears they found it in Roc Thomas.

If I had to pick one player who elevated their stock the most against Denver, it was Thomas. The RB3 spot was wide open heading into Saturday, with players like Mike Boone and Mack Brown eyeing that role behind Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray. However, it was Thomas who stole the show, turning in a breakout performance.

Let’s put it out there — Thomas didn’t do much on the ground. In eight attempts, he managed only 29 yards, a good chunk of which came on a nine-yard scamper. However, some of that can be attribute to a lackluster performance by the offensive line.

Where Thomas really shined was the passing game — where the Vikings needed him to shine. He only caught three passes on the night (tied for the team lead), but turned them into 102 yards and two touchdowns. The first was nearly dropped as he stumbled into the corner of the end zone. The second, however, was a dazzling 78-yard touchdown off a screen pass during which he masterfully used his blockers before turning on the jets on his way to six points.

It’s no sure thing yet — Thomas needs to keep the ball rolling throughout the preseason. His first taste of NFL action, though, left the Vikings and their fans wanting more.
