Can they muster a consistent pass rush?

Though DeForest Buckner and Solomon Thomas combined for a first-quarter sack and Jullian Taylor recorded a crucial one in the fourth, the 49ers struggled to consistently rush the passer against the Cowboys. It is a common theme for the Niners, who had only 30 sacks in 2017. They were, however, playing against one of the best offensive lines in football without free agent signing Jeremiah Attaochu, who has impressed as an edge rusher in camp.

A groin issue held Attaochu out of the preseason opener. Against a Texans line that gave up 54 sacks in 2017, the 49ers will hope Attaochu can make his debut and help them regularly pressure DeShaun Watson and the other Texans signal-callers.

What role will Jimmie Ward play?

Jimmie Ward has the ability to play every position in the secondary, but struggled at outside corner versus Dallas. He was beaten by Michael Gallup for a 30-yard touchdown on the Cowboys’ first drive, losing the ball in the air despite initally appearing to have good coverage.

Given his versatility, it would be no surprise to see the 49ers shift him to a different spot to see if he is better suited to another role and give them the opportunity to hand starting reps to the likes of Tarvarius Moore and Tavarus McFadden on the outside.

There does not appear to be an opening to start at nickel or safety for Ward. However, he has the talent to be a versatile backup and this week could provide a strong indication as to what role he will have with the team going forward.
