Jacksonville Jaguars: Will Dave Caldwell trade Dante Fowler soon?
By Larry Brake
Dante Fowler is embroiled in yet another incident. Will the Jacksonville Jaguars trade Fowler away soon?
The Jacksonville Jaguars left for Minnesota to participate in joint practices and to play Saturday’s Week 2 preseason game. Dante Fowler was activated on Saturday to begin practicing for this season. After Sunday’s practice, he is suspended for a week.
Details are sketchy, but apparently Fowler was involved in two physical altercations. First, Fowler scuffled with James O’Shaughnessy. Second, he and Yannick Ngakoue were separated by teammates and then had to be separated again.
Mike Kaye of FirstCoastNews.com reported that no one seemed to know what caused the incident between Fowler and Ngakoue. Frustration might be the root cause. Ngakoue is headed towards a nice big contact. Fowler is not, unless he turns things around. Remember, Jacksonville declined his contract option.
Fowler was the third-overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft. He missed his rookie season due to injury. Ngakoue, drafted in 2016, became the starter over Fowler. Then the off the field issues caught up with him.
Currently, Fowler is suspended for this week and Week 1 of the regular season. The only person to blame is himself. Will Dave Caldwell shop him and trade him before training camp ends?
Perhaps a new start, with a different team, would be good for Fowler. He played good last season. His sack total doubled from four in 2016 to eight last season. He is a talented, athletic player but can’t stay out of trouble.
There are teams that would be interested in acquiring Fowler. The Jaguars could stockpile more draft picks by dealing him away. Can the Jaguars afford to keep him? Fowler becomes an unrestricted free agent in March. He has to have a huge season to warrant a hefty pay raise. The question to ask is, can he coexist with Ngakoue going forward?
Doug Marrone was asked that at a recent press conference. John Oehser of Jaguars.com reported the following:
"Marrone, … was asked if he worried that Fowler and Ngakoue would have troubles “coexisting.” “I don’t expect that with any of our players,” Marrone said."
Oct. 30 is the NFL trade deadline. Caldwell could be actively seeking a deal but until it happens, expect both players to “get along with each other”. Intrigue has entered into a relatively boring Jaguars training camp. Stay tuned to see how it plays out.
