2. Robert Tonyan pushing for roster spot

Some people may be thinking, “who is Robert Tonyan?”, and rightfully so. Tonyan is an undrafted rookie from Indiana State. An athletic freak, he ran a 4.58-second 40-yard dash and jumped 35 inches in the vertical leap at his Pro Day. Standing at 6-5, 236 pounds, Tonyan possesses the athleticism and traits coaches love to see in a tight end.

Although he only posted three receptions for 20 yards on Thursday night, it was his touchdown grab that raised eyebrows. Tonyan caught a one-yard touchdown on a fade route against Steelers rookie first-rounder Terrell Edmunds. It was an impressive display of athleticism, as Tonyan went up and towered over Edmunds, showing off his 35-inch vertical leap.

Tonyan is currently battling for a spot on the 53-man roster at tight end, a position that already includes decent depth. Jimmy Graham and Marcedes Lewis will undoubtedly lock up the first two spots on the depth chart, while Lance Kendricks figures to be the favorite to be the third man up, although nothing is set in stone.

The Packers are unlikely to keep more than three tight ends on the roster, which could mean bad news for Tonyan and Emanuel Byrd. That being said, if Tonyan has another impressive performance in the preseason, his upside may be too hard to ignore — and he may have even earned some snaps with the first team.
