2018 NFL Power Rankings: Packers put on clinic in Preseason Week 2
By Randy Gurzi
28. New York Jets (28)
There’s not a whole lot about the New York Jets to be thrilled about in 2018. With rookie Sam Darnold under center, they hope to at least finally have their quarterback of the future, but he’s clearly not ready at this point to be a star.
Darnold, the No. 3 overall selection by New York, has been accurate with his passing early on and didn’t look lost as a starter Thursday Night against Washington, but he also didn’t look great. He was completing mostly short passes and didn’t push the ball downfield like his arm suggests he should.
He’s still young, so there’s no need to panic — he also only started two seasons at USC, so he’s still raw overall and needs patience from the staff and fans. He’s also not working with a ton of talent. Jermaine Kearse and Robby Anderson aren’t awful, but they’re not the prototypical No. 1 wideouts either.
Should the Jets win a lot of games this season, it would be a testament to the talent of head coach Todd Bowles. Still, it seems unlikely, but the rebuild is on the right track it seems, even if only because of the fact that they have the hope of a quarterback.
