Philadelphia Eagles: 3 Big takeaways from Preseason Week 2
By Carl Naimoli
The Philadelphia Eagles had a rough go of it this past week. While Foles and the starters looked shaky, the rest of the team picked up the slack in big ways
Thursday night in Foxborough didn’t go exactly as planned for the Philadelphia Eagles. Their 37-20 loss to the New England Patriots put them at 0-2 in the preseason and it looks like they have a lot to improve on.
The first team offense and defense didn’t look like defending Super Bowl champions this week, but the second and third teams held their own.
With the start of the regular season only three weeks away, here are the big takeaways from game two of the 2018 preseason.
3. Nick Foles and the Offense Need More Time
If you were under the impression that Nick Foles and the Eagles offense were going to pick up right where they left off from Super Bowl LII, you were wrong. It was easy to remember the thought of Nick Foles picking the Patriots defense apart with RPOs and the Philly Special, but this past week was a completely different story.
Foles and the offense looked sloppy and undisciplined in the little more than a quarter that Foles played. They weren’t able to reach the end zone as Foles finished 3-of-9 with 44 yards passing and many missed open targets. Not exactly the type of start we were looking for.
With that being said, it’s not the end of the world. Foles and the offense just need more time to get in sync. It didn’t seem like a big deal that Foles missed the first preseason game, but maybe it was. He lost key time to get acclimated to the offense. The loss of Alshon Jeffery on the outside was evident as Foles and offseason acquisition Mike Wallace weren’t able to connect in their limited time on the field together.
It’s still unknown if Carson Wentz is going to be ready or not for Week 1. With signs pointing to Foles being the opening day starter, he’s going to need to step it up. Assuming that his shoulder injury isn’t as bad as it initially appeared, he’s going to play most of the game against Cleveland this upcoming week. If he doesn’t put up a better performance against the lowly Browns there are going to be many people in the Delaware Valley losing confidence in the Eagles quarterback situation.
