With Week 2 of the 2018 NFL Preseason (basically) a wrap, we take a look back at some of the winners and losers from this week’s action.
Another week of action is in the books for the 2018 NFL preseason, with the exception of Monday night’s clash between the Baltimore Ravens and Indianapolis Colts. However, with 30 teams having put forth another effort in exhibition contests, we have seen plenty that we have to take stock of.
Much of the talk coming out of Week 2 of the NFL preseason rightfully is centered around the league’s new helmet rule, which continues to appear problematic. Granted, it could be something that’s being over-called by officials in the preseason as they look to get a handle on the new rule. Still, there is concern among fans and players alike that it could keep coming to light in questionable instances.
That’s for another day, though. For now, we’re going to look at the teams and situations of note coming out of NFL Preseason Week 2. While the dress-rehearsal games await next week, here are the winners and losers from this past weekend of action.
Winner: Dallas Cowboys first-team
On Saturday evening, the Dallas Cowboys ultimately suffered a loss at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals. The final score had America’s Team being defeated 23-13 and, even in the preseason, that’s not what any fan of the Star wants to see happening. However, when you look at the early parts of the contest, things were much more positive for the Cowboys.
While Dak Prescott and the starters for Dallas were on the field, the Cowboys were dominant against the Bengals. The offense moved the ball well whenever they were on the field, even with Ezekiel Elliott still being held out of action and Rod Smith getting the starting running back duties. Meanwhile, the defense continued to look much-improved as they wholly stifled Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati offense.
There was indeed cause for concern for the Cowboys first-teamers as All-Pro guard Zack Martin was forced to leave the game due to injury in the second quarter. However, with reports indicating that it’s just a hyperextended knee and a bone bruise, those concerns have been quelled a bit.
What’s clear from this game is that the Cowboys starters appear primed to get back closer to their 2016 form in the 2018 season. With no Elliott suspension hanging over them this season, we could see Dallas make real noise out of the NFC East if this type of play holds up once the regular season gets underway.
