The Seattle Seahawks tried to trade for Jacoby Brissett and were willing to give up a second-round pick for the backup quarterback.

The Seattle Seahawks aren’t satisfied with their backup quarterbacks. The first signs of that came when the team brought in veteran Josh Johnson for a visit. But the issue was made blatantly obvious when a report broke Sunday (per Ben Volin of The Boston Globe) that the team tried to trade for Jacoby Brissett, but were rejected.

Brissett served as a stand-in for Andrew Luck on the Indianapolis Colts last season and played decently. As far as backups go, he is certainly one of the best and now one of the most experienced. Seahawks quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer worked in Indianapolis last season and was clearly impressed by Brissett. Or at least he was impressed enough to agree with the Seahawks offering a second-round pick to the Colts for Brissett in an attempted trade.

Brissett is a former third round pick by the New England Patriots. He played in three games (two starts) in his rookie season, going 1-1 as a starter, while Tom Brady was suspended and Jimmy Garoppolo was injured.

Then, he was traded to the Colts and played in all 16 games in 2017, starting 15 of those games. The Colts only went 4-12, partly because Brissett proved to not be a great playmaker like Luck. He threw for 3,098 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions with a 58.8 completion rate. Those numbers were hindered by the league-high 52 sacks Brissett took behind an awful Colts offensive line.

The Seahawks current backups are veteran Austin Davis and rookie Alex McGough. Neither has been overly impressive during the preseason. In fact, Davis hardly had any pass attempts in the second week. The fear is that Russell Wilson will be injured and the team will be left with a subpar passer.

Wilson has never missed a start in his career, but injuries happen randomly and sporadically in football. Plus, with the exception of Duane Brown, the offensive line in front of Wilson is full of holes. Just look at how many times he’s had to scramble this preseason. He’s bound to take some hits, the Seahawks just have to hope he holds up.
