The Washington Redskins defeated the New York Jets, 15-13, in Week 2 of the preseason.
It sure wasn’t pretty, but the Washington Redskins picked up their first win of the preseason last Thursday, defeating the New York Jets, 15-13. The scoring came as Dustin Hopkins connected on five field goals, including the game-winner as time expired.
The win means nothing. After all, it’s just preseason football. Some of the more noteworthy things for Washington were the debuts of Alex Smith in a Redskins uniform and rookie Da’Ron Payne getting his first taste of NFL action. For both players, they were impressive debuts. Smith took the team down the field for a score during his only series and completed 4-of-6 passes for 48 yards.
Payne got into the backfield and sacked rookie Sam Darnold. It’s encouraging as the one knock on Payne in the pre-draft process was his supposed lack of pass-rush ability. Well, Payne showed in the College Football Playoff he could get to the passer and, on his sack of Darnold, continued to show he can get to the quarterback from the inside.
It was a rather uneventful game from an offensive perspective for Washington, however, defensively this group showed it is going to be much better in 2018 if everyone can stay healthy.
Here are three big takeaways from the Redskins and their win over the Jets.
