The New York Jets opened training camp with a quarterback competition and a rookie who could earn the job. Where do they stand right now?

New York Jets training camp is almost closed. Before camp opened, we were told all three quarterback would earn there way. The player who would be best to start would start for the team in Detroit on Sept. 10.

From all the reports coming out of camp, rookie quarterback Sam Darnold looks sharp and is progressing.

According to Darryl Slater of NJ Advanced Media, offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates had high praise for the rookie quarterback:

"“I think he’s progressing extremely fast. We haven’t scaled back offensively. We were giving Sam the same amount of information and the same plays that we were giving Josh and Teddy. We’re throwing a lot of football at him and he’s able to handle it. Man, he’s owned the playbook. That’s probably the most impressive thing.”"

Fans and media are impressed with what they’ve seen from Darnold so far in his two preseason games and at camp practice. However, head coach Todd Bowles had to slow down the idea that Darnold has clearly won the job with what he told Matt Stypulkoski of NJ Advanced Media:

"“What you’ve seen and what I’ve seen probably don’t mesh, but all three quarterbacks need to be ready to play for us.”"

If you’re a “reading the tea leaves” type person, you may believe that everything the media is saying from camp and the things the Bates and his teammates are saying leads you to believe Darnold is in the lead. Last year people in the organization had nice things to say about Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, but the praise wasn’t a high as it is this year. However, Bowles won’t give up anything, which is his MO.

Time will tell on whether or not Darnold will start in Detroit, but we are still in the “crawl before we walk” stage. Let’s see what happens against the Giants.
