Arizona Cardinals: Analyzing quarterbacks through Preseason Week 2
By Larry Brake
The Arizona Cardinals have good competition at the quarterback position this summer. How many quarterbacks will be on the 53-man roster? Let’s analyze it.
As training camp opened in July, many people thought that it would be a matter of time before Josh Rosen became the starting quarterback of the Arizona Cardinals. Sam Bradford is listed as the starting quarterback on the current depth chart, however. Most of all at this point, the question is now how many quarterbacks will the Cardinals keep?
Arizona brought in a fresh crop of quarterbacks this spring. Bradford and Mike Glennon signed as free agents and Rosen was the top Cardinals draft pick. Charles Kanoff is the fourth signal caller on the roster.
Clearly, Bradford and Rosen are the top two quarterbacks. Bradford has played very well through both preseason games. Rosen looked much better against New Orleans with the first string offensive line in front of him.
In two games, Bradford has completed all seven of his passes for 67 yards with a quarterback rating of 106.5. He has not thrown a touchdown pass or an interception. It’s going to be interesting to see how many snaps Bradford gets in Dallas this weekend.
Rosen is the team’s passing leader this preseason. He has thrown 29 passes and completed 16 for 148 yards with one touchdown. Since Preseason Week 3 is the dress rehearsal for the regular season, how many snaps will Rosen see and how early will he play? Only Steve Wilks knows for sure.
Glennon is struggling this summer. He looked flustered in preseason week one. Glennon has completed two passes for eleven yards with an interception. There’s a possibility that he might not make the 53 man roster.
Kanoff has played above expectations. He has completed eight passes for 109 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Most of all, his quarterback rating is 99. Surprisingly, he has a higher rating than Rosen.
Last season, Arizona carried three quarterbacks. Bradford and Rosen have two slots which leaves one last spot. As of now, Kanoff has earned that last position.
Would the Cardinals keep two quarterbacks and put Kanoff on the practice squad? Glennon appears to be the odd man out. Cutting Glennon saves Arizona $1 million, but adds $1 million in dead money, according to spotrac.com.
The future looks bright for Arizona at quarterback. This season is going to be exciting. Hopefully, Bradford stays healthy and Rosen gets to learn the pro game slowly.
