Arizona Cardinals: Christian Kirk beginning to showcase his talent
By Larry Brake
Christian Kirk is becoming the player that the Arizona Cardinals drafted in the second round
Steve Wilks and the Arizona Cardinals went shopping for another top receiver in the 2018 NFL Draft. After selecting the future quarterback, they found their receiver. Currently, it appears that investment is going to pay dividends this season.
Christian Kirk was selected as the 47th overall section from Texas A&M. Kirk performed well at the NFL Combine. Most of all, he ran a 4.47-second 40-yard dash. He will be able to vertically stretch the defense.
Since he played at Texas A&M, he faced tough defenses in the Southeastern Conference. Facing the tough Alabama defense, helped prepare him for NFL defenses. Now, he is beginning to separate his talents from the other Cardinals receivers.
Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports the following about Kirk:
"With the Cardinals lacking in receiver depth, Kirk has slowly but surely established himself as a strong possibility to be Arizona’s No. 2 receiver."
Larry Fitzgerald stands to benefit from Kirk being on the field. However, Kirk will definitely benefit from Fitzgerald being a mentor. Kirk will get better as the season progresses and he adapts to the speed of the NFL.
This preseason, Kirk has caught six passes for 58 yards with one touchdown. He leads Arizona in receptions. Kirk has returned two punts for 47 yards with a 38 yard return. His work ethic has gained the attention of Wilks.
Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com reports Wilks’ comments:
"“I said this a while back – this guy comes to work as a pro every day,” Wilks said. “You watch him in individual work, (he’s) full speed. Special teams, full speed. He creates that mindset of practicing as how he wants to play. It as a great confidence booster for him to have the game that he had.”"
Do not be surprised to see Kirk starting opposite Fitzgerald this weekend against Dallas. Just as Josh Rosen received snaps with the first team offensive line, Kirk should get a look. In the dress rehearsal game, Wilks will want to see how Kirk has progressed this summer.
It’s evident that the Arizona investment in Kirk is paying dividends. Only time will tell but it’s going to be an exciting season. Let’s see how it all plays out.
