Green Bay Packers 2018 opponent preview: San Francisco 49ers
It has been three seasons since the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers squared off in a regular season matchup. How will their Monday Night Football matchup play out?
The months of October and November will not be kind for the Green Bay Packers. They have just two home games in the two months.
After the San Francisco 49ers game in Week 6, they have to wait until Week 9 to play at Lambeau Field. After that, Week 13 is their next home game.
Looking at the matchup against San Francisco, it will be a matchup many look forward to and not just because it is on Monday Night Football.
Week 6 at Lambeau Field
After acquiring former Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the 49ers are a surprisingly good team in 2018. Last season, Jimmy G went undefeated in the games he started in. He surely has the makings to be a great quarterback in the near future.
The 49ers are an interesting team. Garoppolo is their franchise quarterback, but he doesn’t have a good supporting cast on offense. This team is surely on the rise, but they are still a couple of moves away from being a contender.
The offense will rely on Garoppolo to make plays. However, it’s hard to do that when you don’t have much around you. Bringing in former Vikings running back Jerick McKinnon helps ease the pressure on Jimmy G, but you need your quarterback to make plays in today’s NFL.
The 49ers defense got a huge upgrade with Richard Sherman. Even though he’s aging, he is still one of the best cornerbacks in the league. The rest of the defense has made improvements, namely with the additions of Reuben Foster and DeForest Buckner. Similar to the offense, the defense is still a few moves away from being elite.
As for this game, it should be one of the more competitive games on the Packers schedule. The 49ers defense will cause problems, especially with their run game. But the 49ers secondary is questionable, even with Sherman. This Packers offense has too many weapons. It will be tough for the 49ers to stop it.
Prediction: Packers win 28-17
