Philadelphia Eagles: 3 Things to watch in Preseason Week 3
By Carl Naimoli
The Philadelphia Eagles are 0-2 so far this preseason. The good news is they get to face the 0-16 Cleveland Browns in hopes to get back on the right track
It’s the most important preseason game of the year for the Philadelphia Eagles. It will be the most we get to see the first-team offense and defense before the regular season begins. The Eagles will be looking to rebound from two less than impressive performances in their first two games.
This week’s opponent is the lowly Cleveland Browns. For those who don’t know, the Browns finished 0-16 last season and 1-15 the year before. This should be just what the doctor ordered for the 0-2 Eagles to get back on the winning track.
With that said, here are the key things to look for in Preseason Week 3.
3. Mike Wallace
One of the Eagles key free agent acquisitions this offseason was wide receiver Mike Wallace. Wallace was pegged to take the spot of departing Torrey Smith as a starter opposite Alshon Jeffery. With Jeffery’s injury and unknown timetable for return, the Eagles No. 1 option at receiver will now be Wallace.
Wallace didn’t play in the Eagles’ first game against the Steelers, but was able to suit up last week against the Patriots. The results were less than stellar. He was targeted three times, but wasn’t able to haul in any receptions. Furthermore he didn’t appear to have much chemistry with Nick Foles, as the timing just seemed to be off with him and the Eagles offense.
This week will be key for Wallace to form some sort of connection with Foles. Most likely neither will play in the final preseason game, so this will be their last chance to play with each other before Week 1. This is assuming that Foles is the Week 1 starter, pending the return from injury for Carson Wentz.
There are a lot of question marks around Wallace as he just recently turned 32 and is with his fifth different team in the past seven years. He doesn’t have to be the Pro Bowl reciever he was at the start of his career in Pittsburgh. However, Wallace does have to find a way to make a name for himself in this Eagles offense, and Thursday night against the Browns will be a good opportunity.
