New York Jets: Trade that could solve multiple problems
The New York Jets could solve multiple problems with a trade with an old trade partner. The Seahawks could provide the Jets with something they need.
Is it possible for the New York Jets to kill multiple birds (more than two) with one stone? Could they find their edge rusher, solve their coverage issue at inside linebacker, trade Teddy Bridgewater, and recuperate the draft pick they traded to land Sam Darnold all at the same time? Yes.
Let’s play the “what if” game. Many people are fixated on Jets landing either Khalil Mack from the Raiders or Dante Fowler Jr. from the Jaguars. There might be a better trade out there, if an old trading partner would be willing to do it.
The trade proposal would accomplish several things. The Jets could move Darron Lee to outside linebacker and use him in his proper role as an edge rusher. They’d get a good pass covering linebacker. They’d trade Teddy Bridgewater, and they’d get a second round pick back. Seattle would have to be willing to trade with the Jets again, though.
Here’s the trade proposal: Teddy Bridgewater to Seattle for Bobby Wagner and a Seahawks second round pick in 2019. It’s a win-win for both teams.
In this case, the Seahawks get a viable NFL backup for Russell Wilson whom they wouldn’t have to make stylistic changes for, and the Jets would get a good coverage linebacker for their 3-4 scheme and the second round pick they need. The Jets would also get Bridgewater off their hands and make it clear that it’s Darnold’s team in 2018.
Lee is better as a run stopper and pass rusher than he is in coverage. So, he belongs as an edge rusher in the Jets scheme. The fans and media are worried about the Jets improving their pass rush. This is the way they can do it.
