Players on the bubble

Javon Wims
Wims showed flashes of what he could do. The seventh-round pick shined in the Hall of Fame Game and afterward, he got work with the starters and No. 2s. He hasn’t been as effective, but he hasn’t been bad either.

The Bears have a big decision to make on Wims. With the receivers corps vastly improved, Wims may be one of the odd men out. The best-case scenario is to stash Wims on the practice squad, but as well as he’s played, other coaches around the league may have their eyes on him. If the Bears feel Wims doesn’t make it through waivers, they might just find a spot for him on the roster.

Kevin Toliver II
Toliver is a talented cornerback out of LSU. He was highly recruited out of high school and showed flashes in college, but he never quite put it together. The Bears hope he does so now. Marcus Cooper hasn’t done anything to win the spot at cornerback, but Toliver hasn’t been able to take control. If he plays well in the final two preseason games, he can make the team.

John Franklin III
Franklin, of Last Chance U fame, is also someone who hasn’t been able to impress the coaches enough. He has good length and athletic ability, so he looks like a good bet to be on the practice squad.

The Bears hope that more than a few of these rookies take a step forward to help the team. If they’re able to do so, then we may be at the start of a new era of Chicago Bears football.
